General overview of the role

Data Analyst collects, processes, and performs statistical analyses of data. This role supports business needs by transforming data into actionable insights that guide strategic decisions. Data Analyst collaborates with various departments to identify opportunities for improvement and develop data-driven solutions, directly impacting the organization’s strategic decision-making and overall efficiency. This position requires strong analytical skills, effective communication, collaboration across teams, and problem-solving abilities to translate complex data findings into clear, actionable insights.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Develop and implement data collection systems and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and data quality, driving more accurate and informed decision-making across the organization.
2. Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems.
3. Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets, enabling the company to anticipate challenges and seize growth opportunities.
4. Filter and “clean” data by reviewing computer reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct code problems.
5. Work closely with management to prioritize business and information needs.
6. Locate and define new process improvement opportunities, leading to increased operational efficiency and cost savings.
7. Generate reports, dashboards, and visualizations to support business decisions.
8. Present findings to stakeholders and provide actionable recommendations.
9. Ensure data integrity and confidentiality, safeguarding the trust and security of organizational and customer data.

Required skills and experience

• 3-5 years of proven working experience as a Data Analyst or Business Data Analyst.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, or Statistics.
• Technical expertise regarding data models, database design development, data mining, and segmentation techniques.
• Strong knowledge of and experience with reporting packages (e.g., Business Objects), databases (e.g., SQL), and programming (e.g., Python, R), including the ability to manage, query, and create database structures.
• Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages (Excel, SPSS, SAS, etc.) to analyze datasets.
• Analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Develop data visualizations that effectively communicate insights to stakeholders.
• Adept at queries, report writing, and presenting findings.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present complex data insights in a clear and accessible manner.

Nice to have/preferred skills and experience (not required)

• Professional certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, Certified Analytics Professional (CAP), or SAS Certified Data Scientist.
• Experience with big data tools (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
• Advanced proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
• Knowledge of machine learning techniques and algorithms.
• Experience with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure).
