General overview of the role

Data Engineer designs, develops, and maintains scalable data pipelines and architectures. They collaborate closely with data scientists, analysts and other stakeholders to ensure data is efficiently collected, stored, and processed to support business decisions and insights. Data Engineers are responsible for implementing data solutions, optimizing storage, and ensuring data quality and security.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Design, build, and maintain reliable, scalable data pipelines.
2. Develop and manage data architecture, including databases and data warehousing solutions.
3. Collaborate with data scientists and analysts to understand requirements and ensure seamless data integration.
4. Optimize storage and retrieval processes for maximum performance and efficiency.
5. Implement quality checks and troubleshoot issues to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
6. Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations.
7. Monitor and manage the performance of data systems and troubleshoot issues.
8. Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in data engineering.

Required skills and experience

• 3-5 years of experience as a Data Engineer or a similar role.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of data engineering tools and technologies (e.g. SQL, ETL, data warehousing).
• Experience with data pipeline frameworks and data processing platforms (e.g. Apache Kafka, Apache Spark).
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala.
• Experience with cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure).
• Knowledge of data modeling, database design, and data governance.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Nice to have/preferred skills and experience (not required)

• Certification in data engineering or cloud technologies (e.g. Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer).
• Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI).
• Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and big data technologies is a plus.
• Understanding data privacy laws and regulations (e.g. GDPR, CCPA).
• Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as Cassandra or MongoDB.
