We are looking for a Linux Kernel Developer (C) to join an established international cybersecurity company that keeps production Linux servers patched against kernel vulnerabilities. Its enterprise customers run Linux on kernel versions that are no longer current, and the company makes sure the latest security fixes still reach those machines. That lets them keep relying on the systems they already have without leaving known vulnerabilities open. You will spend most of your time with patches from the upstream Linux kernel: reviewing each security or bug fix, tracing what it relies on, and porting it to older kernels in RPM-based and Debian-based distributions, including cases where the older code has diverged and a fix needs rework before it can be applied safely. You will also produce the resulting kernel packages, check them for build problems and regressions, and improve the automation the team uses to prepare, build, and test patches. The ideal candidate enjoys meticulous low-level debugging, is comfortable owning a problem until it is fully resolved, and can explain the reasoning and trade-offs behind their decisions.

Requirements

checked icon Hands-on experience with Linux kernel development, patching, or backporting

checked icon Experience building Linux kernels or Linux distribution packages
checked icon Confident with the standard Linux development toolchain, including Git and GNU build tools
checked icon Automation skills in Python, Go, Shell, or a similar language
checked icon Experience using AI-assisted development tools, including validating their output
checked icon A strong sense of ownership over your work
checked icon Ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs
checked icon Intermediate or higher English, sufficient for technical discussions and code reviews

checked icon Experience packaging kernels in RPM, SRPM, or Debian formats
checked icon Experience with security patching, CVE analysis, or long-term maintenance of older Linux releases
checked icon Experience with kernel tracing and debugging tools such as ftrace, kprobes, or eBPF
checked icon Experience with kernel testing, core dump analysis, or regression investigation
checked icon Experience with a specific kernel subsystem, such as memory management
checked icon Experience with Docker, QEMU, Jenkins, or similar build and CI tooling

Responsibilities

checked icon Analyse security fixes and bug fixes from the upstream Linux kernel, including the changes they depend on
checked icon Backport upstream patches to the older kernel versions that enterprise customers use
checked icon Resolve conflicts when a patch does not apply cleanly to older code, finding a safe way to port the fix
checked icon Work with kernels from both RPM-based and Debian-based Linux distributions
checked icon Build and rebuild source and binary kernel packages in reproducible environments
checked icon Verify patched kernels through focused tests, build checks, and regression analysis
checked icon Investigate build failures and possible regressions to find their cause
checked icon Create and update automation in Python, Go, Shell, or a similar language for patch preparation, building, testing, and validation
checked icon Document technical decisions and the trade-offs behind them
checked icon Participate in code reviews within the team
checked icon Take ownership of each fix from first analysis through to a tested kernel package
